France The New York Post reports that Michael Phelps will miss the remainder of world championship swimming championships and the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil as a result of shoulder injury.
Update, 5:15 a.m., ET:
Phelps has not competed in the individual competition since taking home gold in the 400-meter butterfly just days ago, according to the Post's report.
Phelps confirmed to NBC's Richard Engel that he missed the event with a shoulder injury (via Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch):
The injury will end what has been a historic comeback from injury for Phelps, after he missed the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games failed to finish better than seventh at the 2013 world championships, according to SwimSwam.com's Joe Haggerty.
"Michael Phelps and his camp have been in communication with the U.S. Olympic Committee regarding their expectations of Michael in Rio and they are currently reviewing the medical information," U.S. Olympic Committee said in a statement released to the Post. "Michael's injury is not as severe initially feared. He will miss the remaining two races in men's pool and have it re-evaluated after the meet concludes."
On Friday, Phelps posted a message via his official Twitter account asking for prayers following the injury:

Phelps previously underwent surgery on his right shoulder in June 2012, according to USA Today. After surgery, he returned to the pool two weeks later.
